#eu2017ee
DANDELION will organise a Thematic Workshop on 13 October 2017, as a side-event of the Estonian Presidency Research Policy Conference "European Research Excellence - Impact and Value for Society" that will take place in Tallinn, Estonia.
The Thematic Workshop "European integration, inequalities and citizens’ participation: How social sciences create value for policy and society" will take place on the 13th of October 2017 from 09h to 12h.
The interactive roundtable discussion at the workshop will highlight how research from socio-economic sciences and humanities (SSH) contributes to understanding and coping with rising social inequalities and exclusion, how to foster citizens’ and especially youth participation in democratic processes, and not least, how to promote inclusive visions of EU integration.
In a series of inputs, representatives from academia, policy-making, and the civil society will showcase “what works” in practice in terms of research transfer to other societal stakeholders for the common benefit. In the plenary discussion we will identify which factors enable the “ripeness” or readiness of research to deliver impact, which barriers need to be overcome, and when, how and whom to engage within the research process in order to generate value for policy and society.
The rationale and agenda of the Thematic Workshop is available HERE.

DANDELION Workshop - Valorisation Activities and SSH Research Ripeness for Impact
In the context of the Conference “Democracy and Europe - our common future?”, the project DANDELION (‘Promoting EU funded projects of inclusive, innovative and reflective societies’) is organising a workshop on the 31st of October 2017 (14:30 to 17:15) around the theme of “Valorisation activities and SSH research Ripeness for Impact”.
The workshop aims at bringing together SSH researchers, research managers, such as National Contact Points, and dissemination/impact managers, in order to generate actionable knowledge for the everyday practice of SSH research, and help demonstrate and enhance its unique value.
In two consecutive working sessions, we will
FIRST, explore the multitude of research dissemination, communication, and transfer activities between SSH researchers and stakeholders from policy, civil society and business, which lead to positive impacts and societal value out of research; and
SECOND, based upon illustrative cases brought by all participants, we will position ‘productive interactions’ among stakeholders within the stages of the research cycle, which help research results to ‘travel’ outwards, triggering exchange. We will focus thereby on the dimensions of When, With-whom, What, How, and What-for of the activities identified in the first session, in order to come up with what works, where are barriers, but also untapped potential for exchange and collaboration among SSH researchers and stakeholders from policy, civil society, and business.
The number of participants will be limited to 30 and selection will be based upon criteria of diversity, experience, and expertise.

DANDELION Workshop at the World Forum for Democracy 2017
On 9 November 2017, DANDELION will organise the workshop "From Fake to Fact: How to strengthen ties among Research, Policy, and Society to counter populism" within the event World Forum of Democracy 2017 on ‘Populism’, in Strassbourg.
'Post-fact’ politics is internationally fuelling concern, particularly in contested fields of public policy, such as social and minority rights, external relations and migration/refugee affairs, and, not least, counter-terrorism and -radicalisation. The interplay of value divergence and uncertainty has proved very vulnerable to opportunistic, simplistic discourses that blend out uncomfortable facts, disqualify opposing views, and polarise public opinion.
Under such circumstances, the relationship among science, policy making, and society is taking a new twist: In the face of proliferation of fake news via social media, and the spread and ‘normalisation’ of uncivil and manipulative behaviours in the public sphere by populist and extremist parties for political gain, the demand for evidence-based resistance has become visible.
While researchers, policy makers, and the media operate along different logics, interests, and time-frames for their action, there is a pressing need to re-examine responsibilities of research and academia, politicians and public administration, as well as the media and the organised civil society, and recast their strategic partnerships. A common objective thereby is to contribute to the self-defence capacity of democracy’s ‘immune reflexes’ by providing evidence and facts to inform policy making both in the technical-scientific sense, and by promoting plausible counter-narratives in the social media and the public sphere in general.
The speakers’ inputs, representing different stakeholder groups, should spin around the topics of 'How to make research results ‘travel’ as useful and usable evidence to policy makers and civil society actors?’, but also, vice versa, ‘In what ways decision makers and media should integrate evidence from research in order to better serve the public interest?
Specifically, three questions are to be addressed thereby:
1/ What sort of evidence is needed by policy makers, journalists, and CSO practitioners in order to evaluate populist and extremist content, effectively counter distorted narratives, fake news, and undocumented assertions against fundamental rights, and the rule of law?
2/ How do success stories and best cases of evidence transfer to policy and civil society look like? Who, together with whom, is to establish open channels of exchange, at which stage, and what for, in order to facilitate application of such knowledge to inform policy-making and promote plausible fact-based counter-narratives?
3/ Which are the barriers and the untapped potential on the supply and the demand sides for the uptake of scientific knowledge by policy makers/practitioners on the ground? Often, robust research produces valid and reliable evidence, yet it is not always perceived, understood, or timely used by key stakeholders.

- Titus CORLATEAN, PACE, Former Minister of Justice and Foreign Affairs, RO

Key issues in the cultural heritage field, to be discussed in the workshop, (but not restricted to) are:
- How to improve and harmonize the legal environment? What are the main legal obstacles your project faced so far
- What challenges the digital world poses to the field?
- What are the trends of cultural heritage preservation? How do these affect financing research and preservation of the European cultural heritage? Which are the ‘blind spots’ of stakeholders in the field, if any?
